Listening beyond words
Good listening includes content, but it also includes rhythm, emotion, and what remains unsaid. A present listener notices when confidence changes, when humor protects discomfort, or when a pause asks for patience.
This is why presence cannot be convincingly faked while multitasking. People can feel divided attention.
Do less during the conversation
Put the device down. Let the other person finish. Resist preparing your answer while they are still speaking. These small disciplines dramatically change how conversation feels.
Presence is generous because it temporarily stops making the interaction about your response.
Being seen is memorable
Many people move through entire days surrounded by others without feeling truly noticed. Genuine presence therefore feels unusually luxurious.
The gift is simple: for a few minutes, give someone the experience of not having to compete for your attention.
